Mon 29th Aug. Today seemed like a breeze. The route was a lot like Cornwall for the first 20 Miles, then undulating for 15miles and after THURSO flat all the way to John O'Groat's. All along the A836 .The wind was on our backs and significantly less ferocious than yesterday. My buckled wheel dictated my speed, but I had long since decided to take it easy and spend the day with Jenny and Dave. After all Jane had a new buddy for the day, the unshackled and unleashed Caroline.

Strathy Bay
After a cracking evening at the BEN LOYAL HOTEL and a bountiful breakfast we set off at 8.30am. Dave's cunning plan of stoking the fire just before we went to bed and leaving our shoes on the hearth had sadly failed as they had put the fire out as soon as we went up. It started to rain despite the forecast of a fine day on the religiously watched 10 o' clock news last night. No serious climbs until we got to BETTYHILL at 12 miles.

My mate Jenny!

Although the wind was 20mph and scooping us up the hills. After her experiences yesterday Jenny seemed relaxed and was cycling at a steady pace on her incredibly squeaky bike. The first 20 miles had some sharp ups and downs. Not being able to benefit from the downs I was instead clinging on to the brakes and keeping an eye on my front wheel. Watching Jenny fly past me on every descent. I even caught a fleeting glimpse of Jane and her new cycling partner on the horizon climbing up the next hill. I empathised with Caroline as I watched her slowly loosing touch as Jane blasted up the hill. I was feeling rather pleased with my choice and felt really comfortable chatting away the morning with my mate Jenny. Who I've got to know fairly well over the past two weeks, so the hours and the miles slipped by unnoticed.
We'd done 25 miles before the first rather disappointing scheduled stop. A shop with no hot drink or shelter. We had to sit outside chomping away on our cold pasties. At least they had a toilet. It started to rain again so we pushed on to THURSO. 15miles further on. We got there an hour later and were in need of a nice hot coffee as the cold Scottish summer was taking it's toll. Thurso is a surprisingly large town and we soon found Jane and Caroline at the first Cafe' on the left. It was bland and unimpressive, but warm with seats so good enough. Jenny and I just had time to order our food when Dave arrived followed swiftly by the boys. You sensed today was a bit of an anti climax. We were on the same road all day, no interesting places, no views of any note and no difficulty in the cycling as we had the wind behind us. We did get a rare glimpse of Bob, who proceeded to order loads of cakes. No wonder he was so slow!
We stayed for half an hour then set off for the final 20 miles of this epic journey.
Jane by now had persuaded Caroline to do the extra 8 miles and go via DUNNETS HEAD. The most northerly part of the British Isles. I knew she would. I did feel a pang of frustration at my bike, but was already resigned to not visiting the top of the country. So thought I'd give Caroline the pleasure of watching Jane's rather shapely backside disappear into the distance up to Dunnet's Head. Jenny , Dave and I completed the final few miles together with all the hills of the day climbed and a strong wind on our backs we floated along the well surfaced roads from Thurso to our final destination. JOHN O' GROATS. Which incidentally should be renamed Grotty o' Groats. I thought Land's End was a bit bleak but this place took the biscuit. The original hotel long since closed down and painted in an array of gaudy fluorescent colours graffiti like in their presentation.

The van was at the finishing line. We all rather appropriately (apart from the 'posh')rolled down the last road together, had our photo's taken by Tony and were handed our celebratory mugs and medal, along with a Luke warm plastic cup of cheap champagne. Which rather summed up John O' Groats. We were then sent to the cafe' to wait for BOB to finish!

Peppermill Anyone?

Ignoring the man at the kiosk with his 'charity bucked' for photo's. I hurdled the rope with Caroline and we took pictures for each other at the finish post. Bob arrived 15 mins later and the official group photo was at last taken. Onto the SEAVIEW HOTEL back up the hill for the final get together with this delightful bunch of strangers, that would all now hold a piece of my heart and warm colourful memories.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-15-mon-30th-aug-tongue-to-john.html' title='Day 15. Sun 28th Aug. As you hit the pavement the wind hits gale force 9 and you struggle to stand up as your blown sideways in the 70mph gusts. Then it starts to piss down with rain. Seriously this is not the weather to go out for a walk to the shops. Best go back inside and wait till it stops raining at least. Sensible thing to do is get in the car for the journey, stay warm and dry. After all you new it was going to be this bad because it was forecast the night before...............

Having told Jane last night that it would be sensible to stay with the group today because of the severe weather warning we had seen on the news . We gathered our bikes and our thoughts outside the grotty NOVAR ARMS HOTEL. Jenny and Dave were expecting our company. The rain and the wind already getting stronger. Jane glanced across her shoulder and said something like," Let's get this done come on"! Like a lamb all my resolve gone in an instant I followed. Jenny said "Go on we'll see your smiling face at the end" resigned to not seeing her friend again for the day. Sympathetically I left them and we were off again.

Having cycled through plenty of rain during this trip, I felt prepared for the worst. Maybe it's best to get this over and done with as quickly as possible. How wrong I was.
It soon dawned on me that I had completely the wrong choice of clothing. Jane had her Gortex weather proof's on and seemed OK. After an hour of struggling in the wind we reached the open moorland after ARDROSS FOREST. It hit us with avengance, wallop. The wind was unabating. Wicked in it's ferocity. Ripping at my sodden clothes, taunting me for my stupidity. After an hour and a half we had only covered 12 miles. We would have usually covered 25 by now! I knew I would be in serious trouble if I didn't get some waterproofs and some warmer clothes on. Having just three thin layers on which were all wet through. The wind was bitterly cold and prevented me from getting any kind of warmth from the rhythm of cycling. I phoned the support vehicle and left a message for some assistance.
The scheduled stop was the FALLS OF SHIN 13 miles away and I was now shivering cold.
Thankfully Tony phoned back right away and said that KEN was still at the other hotel, but would soon be leaving in the van to catch us up. So we pushed on and because of the 5 min stop Jane was now feeling the cold as well. Ken eventually caught up 1 mile from the falls. Not really a good idea to stop in the middle of nowhere in the pissing rain to get changed so he continued to the falls and we met him there.

The Falls of Shin on a better day!
Ken was a bit flustered as quite a few of the group were having problems in the weather, so he wanted to get away as quickly as possible to help the others.
A quick change and into the cafe'/souvenir shop. By now I was shivering uncontrollably, teeth chattering. I needed something warm inside me. A nice bowl of hot soup and a dry set of clothes helped no end and I was soon back to my normal self. To my surprise Caroline was the next in. Without her boys. Having decided discretion is the better part of valor, had left them behind to fend for themselves. " Too bloody slow" she said.
Now Caroline is a thin slip of a woman, but they are obviously made of sterner stuff in Derbyshire. She had a flimsy pair of shorts on and was coping much better than I.
Just as we three were about to go the others came in together. Pete had his usual glazed, 'What the fuck am I doing this for' expression. Jenny looked like she had been having a hard time of it. She was soaked through and freezing cold. I felt a pang of guilt for not staying with her and gave her a sympathetic hug as we passed in the doorway. She felt really cold.

So the three of us set off. Caroline's cheery demeanor raised my spirits as we took turns in facing the wind and rain head on. All was going well despite the weather, with only 15 miles to cover until our next stop at the CRASK INN where they were apparently expecting us.
At the current pace we should be there in an hour and a half!. It was really tough going. You couldn't hear anything but the wind. When you did get a slight respite from some trees you had to brace yourself when you came out as you were blown across the road by it's shear ferocity. Then with about 2 miles till the Pub . Bang.. What the? One of my front spokes snapped and the wheel instantly buckled. I was sheltering behind Caroline at the time. She must have only been 20ft in front of me by the time I'd realised what had happened. I called out, but because of the howling wind she couldn't hear me. I watched as they slowly drifted into the distance. I stopped to remove the spoke, quietly cursing to myself. Today of all days.... They would realise I wasn't there soon enough. After about 10 minutes of wobbling along Jane appeared on the horizon. She got to me full of apologies for leaving her cycling buddy behind. We got to the pub cold wet and tired from our exertions in the storm. What a welcome site. A welcome as warm as the soup and a hot stove to dry our clothes over.
We gather around the stove to warm our bones. Midsummer in the north of Scotland . Delightful. They even had hooks above to hang our jackets and hooks on the mantle sills to hang sodden gloves. I made another call to the support van, hoping that they would have a spoke to fit my wheel.

The Wonderful Crask Inn. On a better day.
Ken arrived after about 15 mins and managed to tension the other spokes and get rid of the worst of the buckle. After about 45 mins Caroline and Jane were eager to get going and get this day finished. So I told them to go on without me as today was not a day for hanging around. I was about to leave when the others arrived. First in were Sunni and Chris, followed shortly after by the boy's without their leader. Dave was with them and eventually Jenny. I was shocked to see the state she was in. She was frozen, sodden and sobbing. Now Jenny is a strong woman and to see her in such distress was quite alarming. She was being fussed over by all the others, with people running in and out with dry clothes for her to wear. I had to go though and I genuinely thought that they would not let her continue as she was in such a bad way. I had 25 miles to go on my own in the storm and I desperately wanted this day to end. I gave Jenny a warm hug and some words of support then slipped out to face what mother nature could throw at me! The last 25 miles took me 3 hours! The wind, getting harsher as the day went on, now tasted of salt. As I rounded one sheltered corner , I was caught by a ferocious blast and was carried across the road and almost over the other side into the estuary. Just clipping the verge on the other side before leaning into the wind and back over to the left hand side. Man that was close. It was quite a drop over the edge.
The last 6 miles seemed to take an age. after each turned corner I was expecting to see the outline of the town or something resembling civilisation, but nothing just desolate barren heathland and the mocking wind to greet me as I rounded the bend.
Just to cap the day, with a few hundred metres to go, I was climbing up the last hill of the day to reveal the town and seafront beneath me when a car came unannounced at my side. Startled I lost control of the bike, veered off the road and did a comedy roll down the verge to my left. Ending upside down legs a-kimbo against a mesh fence. The driver was quickly out of the car apologising." I'm OK mate" I said. I could see the town from my prone position and was not in the mood to exchange pleasantries. So wiped myself down and rolled down the hill to the wrong Hotel! They did indeed have a reservation for Chris from Bike Adventures. But this was the 'Posh' Hotel. Very nice too! I excused myself and headed down the road to our 2* accommodation. Ken was there to take my bike, I asked how Jenny was and was astonished to hear that they had let her carry on. " You are F****ng Joking". I said. "Didn't you see the state she was in". Ken shot off to find her. She'd managed another 20 miles and was found crouching in a bush, just a few miles up the road. Thankfully this time Ken persuaded her to call it a day and except a lift to the Hotel. I skulked to my room and had a much needed hot shower and decided then that I would stay with Jenny tomorrow and not be swayed to do otherwise.
I asked the lady on reception if they had any facilities to dry my clothes. I was despatched back to my room to pick up said items and she took the lot and had them dried for me. Thank you Maam! I slipped into the bar to meet Caroline and Jane for a drink. When Jenny arrived Jane went to run her a hot bath. Leaving the two of us to chat about what had been a rather testing bloody horrendous day. I informed Caroline that she was Jane's new cycling buddy for tomorrow as I was staying with Jenny.

The Ben Loyal Hotel
When Dave Jenny and Jane sat down we were harrassed by a Pissed Scottish poacher who wanted to dance with Jane and kept saying that I looked 'serious'. Apart from that minor irritation we had another great night at the BEN LOYAL HOTEL. The food and company again first class. They even let us hang all our wet stuff on the radiators in the restraunt, I only had a wet pair of shoes by that time! Happy Days.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-14-sun-28th-aug-evanton-to-tongue.html' title='Day 14. This was the day I had dreamed about doing. Along the CALEDONIAN CANAL and LOCH NESS. I'd envisaged the beauty of my surroundings and the majesty of BEN NEVIS towering above the landscape.
So today I was going to enjoy.
After another agreeable evening with my friends at the Alexandra Hotel, we gathered after a bountiful breakfast to hear today's brief. Even after being told by Tony and Ken that mine and Jane's bikes were not suitable for a part of the loggers road at CLUNES and that we had to skirt around it adding 8 miles to our already high mileage of 78 Couldn't dampen my spirits.
The thought of all the mountain views and cycling along the Lochs had my juices flowing so I was eager to get going. We set off at 8.30 and after a couple of miles were climbing over the CANAL and riding through the beautiful undulating valley at TORCASTLE with the canal to our right and views of a cloud covered BEN NEVIS.

Ben Nevis
We got to GAIRLOCHY and headed right, back over the canal and along the diversion which was a smooth road eventually meeting the A82 at the COMMANDO MEMORIAL. We stopped there for some photo's, just over an hour into the day. Dave and Jenny and in fact most of the others in our group had decided to stay on the A82 for 50 miles before turning off onto the A833 at Drumnadrochit. So it came as no surprise when we were taking photo's to see Christine go past head down not even pausing to take a look at this wonderful memorial.

We set off after her and eventually caught her up at the top of a long climb where to our surprise we found all the other cyclist taking a breath. Forgetting for a moment that we had already done 8 more miles than them. I couldn't resist the long descent so we flew down leaving all the others in our wake as we kept up a good pace along LOCH LOCHY. eventually crossing the Loch at the LAGGAN SWING BRIDGE. Continuing on to INVERGARRY. Jane and I used now to doing 50 miles before first stop, pressed on. The weather was fine and warm again with no wind. Can this really be Scottish Weather? After a brief cut inland at INVERGARRY we headed along LOCH OICH and eventually got onto the CALEDONIAN CANAL. Through my months of preparation this was the part of the ride I had been looking forward to the most. Always imagining what it would be like to cycle along the GREAT GLEN. I wasn't disappointed. Although at times because the tow path was so lumpy I found myself concentrating on the path to avoid the large stones and craters rather than taking in the views.

Loch Ness

We got back on the A82 at FORT AUGUSTUS and as soon as there was a clearing in the tree line, stopped to take some photo's of LOCH NESS.

Urquhart Bay Drumnadrochit

Along Loch Ness

First stop today was DRUMNADROCHIT three quarters along the length of LOCH NESS. As this was the August bank holiday weekend the Highland Games were in town. Lots of costumes and kilts on show. Also lots of tourists.
We stopped off at the Glen Cage Cafe' which had a rather dour Scotsman manager who informed us that if we were eating outside we had to order outside through the hatch! So we walked away from the counter where he was , went outside and he took our orders at the hatch!!!
After the smallest pot of soup ever, a Coffee and a Red Bull. I was ready for the sharp climb out of town. We were preparing to leave when some motorcyclists took an interest in our bikes. They had also ridden from Fort William and were amazed that we had just cycled the 51 miles to get there.
We were just saying our goodbye's when Sunni and Chris rocked up on their £5000 bikes and matching outfits. Catching the motorcyclists attention again. The hill out of town was very steep. I was glad that I'd had the Red Bull for that extra injection of caffeine. As I watched Jane pull away from me again. At the top of the climb we were passed by Tony in the van catching us up for only the second time on this trip. We had a quick chat and carried on, safe in the knowledge that our kit would be waiting for us in EVANTON when we reached the hotel. With the promise of clean fresh clothes and not the scrumpled up ones stowed away on my bike.
We had views down to the BEAULLY FIRTH on our right as we approached the surprisingly populated town of DINGWALL and views to the CROMARTHY FIRTH and the long road bridge across it. We took the cycle path out of Dingwall which had a short sharp climb and gave us even better views of the road bridge and beyond.

Cromarthy Firth road bridge

On the cycle path 4 miles outside of EVANTON we were absolutely astonished to find Christine. Legs crossed leaning on a fence munching away on a rather large french stick.
She reminded me of Bugs Bunny chomping on that roll. When he is always getting the better of Elmer Fudd. Well slap my thighs and call me Elmer. I just don't understand how she got passed us. I know we stopped at DRUMNADROCHIT but that was 25 miles ago. She can't have stopped at all since we passed her just after the Commando Memorial 65 miles before!
Hats off to her. She's a woman of few words and obviously fewer stops so after a very brief chat we excused ourselves and proceeded cursing under our breath.
We got to Evanton and met an annoyed Tony. Who was frustrated at the lack of help he was getting unloading the bags from the Novar Arms Hotel/Pub staff. The bar was packed with bank holiday drinkers, so we went to our very basic rooms. Freshened up and came down for a deserved pint to wait for the others to arrive. Jane sinking two pints of Guinness!
Jenny and Dave arrived an hour and a half later. Quickly followed by Caroline and the boys.
The rooms were pretty sparse and ill equipped at the hotel but the evening meal and subsequent breakfast were OK.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-13-sat-27th-aug-fort-william-to.html' title='Day 13. We are getting along splendidly
as a group. I know I've said this before but the other six are missing out on so much.
We don't cycle with them and we don't see them in the evenings. Christine is doing her own thing and Bob is so far behind, he's on his own during the day most of the time. Howard and Steph stay on their own as do Chris and Sunni. They don't even mix as a six!! There's nought as strange as folk! So you'd think they would make an effort and join us in the evening. We have such a laugh sharing our experiences of the day and finding out little bits about each other. I always say experiences are much better shared with friends and we are already making plans to meet up after this adventure. I doubt the same can be said for the 'Posh'.
Anyway I digress..
We left at 8.30 and were straight into a steep climb along the wooded valley of GLEN ARAY initially 13% then climbing gently for 7 miles until dropping down to the shores of LOCH AWE. The weather was fine and sunny with little wind, perfect for cycling.
We hit some road works half way up and were kept waiting at the traffic lights for what seemed an age. In fact we thought that the rest of the group would catch us up.Shock horror! Eventually we got a car escort along the roadworks. He was going from one end of the works to the other making sure no one jumped the lights as each change took 10 minutes.
Once passed the works we were in for a real treat as we had ten miles of freshly re-tarmacked road. Smooth as a baby's backside and bliss for my damaged rear end as well.
In fact the only sore point about this adventure is my sore arse!

Loch Awe

We reached Loch Awe and passed the Island of INISHAIL with it's 13th century Chapel.
Going at some pace today and I sensed Jane was in a hurry. I was trying to take in the beautiful views. So many of them you get a bit blase'.

Inishail Island and Chapel
We turned around the head of Loch Awe on the A85 and doubled back around the other side for 5 miles. Then through the wooded valley of the PASS of BRANDER to TAYNUILT. Then on to Connel where the road climbed to cross the Bridge over the estuary with the shimmering beauty of ARDMUCKNISH bay to our right and on to BENDERLOCH.

Ardmucknish Bay

Loch Linnhe

Loch Linnhe

Loche Linnhe

We then came upon a mixture of cycle paths which were pleasant to ride along away from the busy A828 until we reached APPIN with a further 2 miles of secluded cycle paths.
Then a steep climb up the main road to PORTNACROISH. This was our planned stop some 47 miles into the day. We stopped at the 'Castle Storker View' cafe which offered views down to LOCH LINNHE and SHUNA ISLAND. The cafe was fairly busy, obviously a popular stop for tourists. We had our customary bowl of soup and I had a mouth watering apple crumble and cream for pudding. Using the remainder of my cream for my coffee, yum yum. Where as Jane opted for a flapjack and a scone. ( how do I remember all this? Normally my memory is shocking). The soups are definitely getting smaller the further up the British Isles we get.
The soup was however served swiftly, mine arriving before Jane had ordered hers and sat down.
With just 25 miles to do we set off with renewed vigour and blasted along LOCH LINNHE entering THE HIGHLANDS and onto more cycle paths to north BALLACHULISH. (pronounced Ballahulish, Ta Dave.)and onto the bridge separating Loche Linnhe and LOCH LEVEN. This is where today's ride took an interesting turn. We were just coming off the cycle path and onto the main A82 when four chaps on bikes came past in front of us. They began to pull gently away. We are no slouches and were going along at about 17mph. Jane was behind me which was a rare occasion on this trip let me tell you. I noticed that one of the chaps had panier's and thought that I can't let them get away from me with panier's on the bike so I upped the pace and after about a mile caught them up and soon passed. It was my intention just to get by them and put a bit of distance between us, but Jane had other ideas. She blasted passed me saying something like, "You're going to regret that". Continuing to hurtle down the road at breakneck speed. I quickly got on her back wheel and we raced along for about 10 miles! As the terrain was relatively flat I was able to keep up to her. But I'm sure that I've told you before , this lady is fast. A 26min 10 mile TT rider. So rather depressingly for me as soon as we hit a slight incline she pulled away and I was alone with my thoughts.

View from b&b window at Fort William
Just beside the 'Welcome to Fort William ' sign Jane was waiting for me. I skulked up and we rode through town together to our b&b. The Guisachan Guesthouse. Where this time Jane managed to blag an upgrade to a room with a view over to Loch Linnhe.
We were really going well today and had time to wash , change and stroll into town. Do some shopping and scout out all the local eateries for the evening. We had a drink and got back to the b&b before anyone else had arrived.
Dave got back first minus Jenny. She'd been having problems with her bike and Ken had taken her to the bike shop in town to get it fixed. Caroline and the boys arrived soon afterwards. We had a drink with Dave who then left to get ready for the evening. Jenny arrived with Ken and joined us for a pint of Cider. When the group joined us it was Robin who persuaded us to go for dinner at the Alexandra Hotel as we would get 10% off with our hotel cards. The only place we hadn't been earlier! Time was getting on so eager for some food Dave, Jenny , Jane and I set off for the hotel which was just around the corner. We sat down and were entertained by a Scottish female one woman band who had a very pleasant voice. The rest of the group joined us soon afterwards and another enjoyable evening was had by all.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-12-fri-26th-aug-inveraray-to-fort.html' title='Day 12. Thur 25th Aug. Strahaven to Inveraray. 90 Miles.

Lots More Mileage!

A very long days cycling ahead. We had a wonderful meal at RISSONS RESTAURANT in the Springvale Hotel last night. I had roast pork with delicious crackling. The best meal so far on the trip by a country mile.We even had a game of footy to watch outside the conservatory window.
Speaking of country miles we have 90 of them to cover today. Earlier in the week we promised Jenny that we'd stay with her and Dave today. I was resolved to, right up until late last night, I say late but it was about 9.30! When Jane twisted my arm. After Tony had told her that although the official advice was to stick together until we got past the Peoples Palace as long as we two stuck together we'd be fine. Jenny was a bit miffed and to be honest I don't blame her.
So Jane and I left on our own at 8.00am. Early start as we wanted to get past Glasgow as soon as possible.
The first 10 miles into HAMLTON and then on to the beast that is GLASGOW.
It was grey and overcast and we were expecting rain at some time this morning, as we headed down the A723 into Hamilton. We got to the first cycle path and it had a closed and diversion sign up. We thought about it for a split second then thought b****cks were not attempting a diverted route in Glasgow so we headed down the very steep descent over a contributory river and back up just as steeply the other side.
The workmen hadn't even started yet and as far as we could tell the diversion was just so they wouldn't be disturbed by cyclists. So we texted Jenny to tell her to ignore the diversion as well and carried on.
After a short spell on the cycle path we were back into the suburbs studiously following the Satmap until picking up the River Clyde cycle path a few miles on. Carefully skirting all the broken glass that was on the path that was absent of people this early in the morning. We agreed that it wouldn't be much fun doing this later as it looked a really dodgy area.
We got to the Winter Gardens in Glasgow Green at 9.30 which houses the grand looking Peoples Palace which is a museum and a cafe' opened in 1898. At the time, the East End of Glasgow was one of the most unhealthy and overcrowded parts of the city, and the People's Palace was intended to provide a cultural centre for the people. We stopped for a breather and that was when I noticed the Satmap had run out of battery and shut off. We had no option but to wait for the others. I phoned Ken and he said they were about twenty minutes behind so we parked the bikes and waited. It started to rain!

Peoples Palace. Ken Receiving his sons GCSE Results.

When the others arrived at 10am Dave gave me his spare battery and I got my unit working again. No point in rushing off in the rain so we followed the group into the large glass roofed Cafe' for tea and scones.
I actually felt quite relieved to be with the group as I knew we had to pick our way across the centre of Glasgow and find the cycle path again for the next 15 miles. It was lovely and warm inside the Palace and we stayed for about 40mins. We were just leaving when the 'Posh' minus Caroline turned up. Obviously slept in.
Chris and Sunni opting to ignore the no bikes sign and brought there expensive carbon fibre's into the cafe'.
Refreshed and ready for the road ahead the group set off with there two new additions! It was funny because Robin is obviously used to being anchor man and I was hanging back taking photo's of everyone. He was twisting and turning in his saddle anxious for me to get in line. A bit like the Elephant convoy in Jungle book I thought! We got into the centre of Glasgow after a little bit of criss-crossing through suburban roads. Actually the centre looks great. Lots of money has obviously been spent to tidy the place up and I have to say it looked rather splendid. Helped by the fact that the sun had peeped out on us. We cycled at a serene pace along the cobbled path of the Clyde passing Albert Bridge then George V Bridge and finally Bells Bridge before joining Cycleway 7 which hugs the River Clyde and is a delightful way to get out of Glasgow.

Lunch

Cheer up Dave
We stayed on the path all the way to MILTON which was our intended lunch stop. We arrived at just before 2pm. Jane and I would usually be on our final stretch before arriving at the Evenings stop by now. But here we were only 36 miles into a 90 mile day. It was going to be a long one. We all stopped at the same pub and sat outside with our food. I had a half of 'bitter and twisted' ale along with my prawn baguette. We were getting pestered by wasps so only stayed for 3/4 hour.

It was time for us to leave the convoy and head out along LOCH LOMOND then a sharp left to take on the climb up GLEN FRUIN to GARLOCHHEAD and all along LOCH LONG. The group had decided to stay on the busy A82 along LOCH LOMOND missing the quieter country road along the climb and knocking several miles off the route. Fair play but Jane is not a lady for wimping out. I quite fancied the climb as well as we had been poodling along all day and I felt fresh.

LOCH LONG

View From 'Rest and be Thankful'

Dave Smith my roomate

Caroline Getting to the top
We cycled along the A82 for 6 miles it was quite busy and we were glad to get on the quiet A817 where the climb was steady with a few sharper ascents then a very steep descent down to LOCH LONG. We cycled along the loch passing the oil refinery, all the way to the end then around and back on ourselves the other side of the loch for a few miles before starting our climb up GLEN CROE along the A83. A climb that the others could not navigate around and had to negotiate as well. It was a long hard 6 mile slog up to the Rest & Be Thankful at the top.
The old road through the glen seen in the photograph is part of the military road that ran from Dumbarton to Inveraray. This was built in the 1740s. A stone inscribed Rest & Be Thankful was erected around 1749, after this section of road was completed. It's now just a car park and a photo spot. The climb got steaper and I watched Jane dissapear into the distance as the road curved around the glen. Eventually after what seemed like an age I reached the top. Finding a rather flustered Jane trying to get her back tyre off as she had got a puncture towards the top. I changed the innertube for her and put the tyre back on pumped it up and it went down again. Bugger! must have nipped it! To my relief Ken arrived and took over. I gave him one of my tubes as Jane had no more and he fixed it in double quick time. To our surprise the group started to arrive in dribs and drabs. Well we had been messing about for about 20 mins . I went off to take some photo's and by then we were all at the top. We assembled together and prepared for the descent down to INVERARY. "It's a long way to Inveraray. It's a long way to go". I'd been singing that all the way from Glasgow. Now we were only a 4 mile descent down GLEN KINGLAS and along the beautiful LOCH FYNE before arriving. It was 6.30pm. Finally getting there just before 7pm. Eleven hours since we set of this morning! I took some action photo's on the way down and a picture of the Castle in the fading light.Which took 40 years to build finally being completed in the 1780's.

Jenny Starting Descent into Inveraray

Dave S

Inveraray Castle

We stayed in the fine looking ARGYLE HOTEL, although as we all know appearances can be deceptive. It was rather shabby and run down inside. It had been a long but very interesting and varied day. With a nice mix of riding fast with Jane and at a steady pace along the CLYDE with Jenny, Dave,Caroline and her Boys. Robin, Pete and Dave W.
Jenny, Dave and I decided to have a pint before getting a shower as dinner wasn't until 8/8.30 and they were totally unprepared for us because they'd fully booked the restaurant. It took them 10 mins to serve us our pints and we ended up knocking one over as we sat down on the crumpled old chairs.Doh! We ended the day eating in the conservatory, which suited us as it had pleasant views across the lock and we watched the night fall as we ate our Pub Grub and settled down as a group of friends to another great evening.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-11-thur-25th-aug-strahaven-to.html' title='Day 11. Wed 24th Aug. Ecclefechan to Stathaven. 80 Miles.

Serious Mileage!

After a lavish breakfast, served by the polite young man. Who seemed to be doing every ones job at the hotel.
Jane and I set off. Again planning to do 50 miles before stopping at BIGGAR for lunch. The mileage has been going up in notches over the past few days and today was a testing 80 miles, for Jane and I anyway. As everyone else were busy plotting shorter routes to Strahaven avoiding the five mile climb at MOFFAT. Choosing instead to follow the main roads and not deviate through the countryside climbs that were intended for the route.
No such plans for us.. The start of the day was a long stretch running parallel to the M74 along the B7076, the A702 and finally the B7078. This was all along the Annan Valley so quite easy cycling. Eventually we turned right along the A701. This is where our route deviated from the others. They continued up the B7078 which continued to run alongside the A74 and M74 . This was at 23 miles. The official route however took in the long 5 mile climb to the Scottish Borders region before descending for 7 miles into BROUGHTON and eventually lunch at BIGGAR. The climb wasn't very steep at any point again just a long slog on and off the saddle. The pleasing thing was the surface of the road was very good and we noticed that the tour of Britain was coming up this climb in 2 weeks time. I tried to imagine how much faster they would be coming up than me. When a succession of good club cyclists came past me at 5 minute intervals. Oh that fast!

Well surfaced climb
Jane was a speck on the horizon by now, in fact she stopped twice to let me catch up such was the length of this one. When I finally reached the top we took some photo's and the club cyclists were coming back up the other side of the climb. We'd reached the Scottish Borders and we started down what proved to be a wonderful 7 mile descent. I couldn't resist it and hit the hammer! Zooming down the hill at 75kmh on some parts. Magical after the long stretch up.

Top of climb

As the road levelled out Jane came along side. It's the first time I've seen her out of breath on the trip. A feeling of guilty pleasure engulfed me. Then off she went. Leaving me in her wake!
After 46 miles we turned off along the B7016 to BIGGAR. I saw a sign 29miles to Edinburgh and did start to wonder whether we were going the right way. We entered SOUTH LANARKSHIRE . We stopped as planned in Biggar which looked like a bit of a retirement town, at the first cafe we came across. Where we again had a rather small soup, hot drink and a piece of carrot cake to refuel. As we were sitting enjoying our light lunch it seemed like half the towns pensioners had congregated at the cafe and it was getting very busy. Time to go.
Straight out of BIGGAR we hit the cycle network roads which offered virtually traffic free cycling for the next 20 miles. We stopped to take a picture of the purple heather fields near a rather endearing village called BOGHEAD. We soon ate up the remaining ten miles to the larger town of STRAHAVEN. (Pronounced STRAYVEN thanks again Dave)

Where we walked passed the SPRINGVALE HOTEL a couple of times as it had a large sign outside saying RISSONS RESTAURANT.
We were first back and were shown to our rooms by the owner Anne Baxter. In fact it was so nice there we thought for a moment we were at the 'Posh Hotel'. They must be staying in a stately home if this is the standard we've got tonight. We stuck to our routine and an hour later were enjoying a cold glass of lager in the conservatory restaurant waiting for our friends to arrive. Who I'm sure by now were used to us smiling out of the windows at them with drinks in hand. Whilst looking out of the window at the kids having a knockabout in the football nets on the pitches in the park, the chef came in and he was a rather large cheery chap. Bodes well for the meal tonight we agreed.

We were proved correct in our presumption as we enjoyed another great meal later on that evening.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-10-wed-24th-aug-ecclefechan-to.html' title='Day 10. Dave, Robin and I did the short walk through the alleyway to meet the others who were staying at the rather grubby Black Bull Hotel.
By far our worst meal and service so far on this trip.

View from window at White Gill House
We had to dig all the bikes out of the cellar as Jenny, Jane and Dave's bikes were first in so at the back of the pile. Because the Posh had got a lift to their castle yesterday afternoon their bikes were slobbing it in 2* with ours. As they probably wouldn't be woken by the chamber maids for at least another hour, we thought they wouldn't appreciate us leaving them outside. Although there was no way they were going back down the cellar, so I popped in to see the chef at the Black Bull and negotiated the use of the grot pit we had eaten in the previous night. Leaving their bikes at the mercy of the rats and cockroaches in the dining area(only kidding) we set off for SCOTLAND.

Eden Valley
Another 50 miles before first stop for Jane and I today. Then a mere 22 miles to Ecclefechan( a name that we had been practicing for a while now) and Scotland. We weren't exactly basking in sunshine but it was a warm high clouded morning with no prospect of any rain.
We cycled along lovely traffic free roads through the EDEN VALLEY encountering the occasional steep climb, the first being at NEWGIGGIN after 18 miles, just to warm the legs up. You notice I'm getting so blase' about the hills now... Mostly the roads were undulating along the valley. The next climb was just after ARMATHWAITE but only a short sharp one at 35 miles.

We crossed the river EDEN at WARWICK BRIDGE after which we got back onto the cycle network until the busy A689. Around which we apparently passed Hadrians Wall, but I didn't spot it.
Along the A689 we stopped for lunch at the large and rather plush 'HOUGHTON HALL GARDEN CENTRE'. Leaving our bikes outside and locked up. I would recommend if you should ever venture in to take the bikes around the back as the Cafe' is deep into the bowels of the centre, but does have an outside area where I noticed other bikes were left.
We had our usual Soup and the customary cake with tea and coffee. Smaller portions of soup now I noticed. Very Nice (Jenny) none the less.
45 minutes later and we were on our way to the border. Via cycle network 7 crossing the river ESK at LONGTOWN and finally the river SARK and into SCOTLAND.
No official welcome to Scotland sign here, as it is a small country lane. Tony however had been a busy boy this morning as we found a 'Bike Adventures welcomes you to Scotland' sign planted in the grass just over the river. Very thoughtful.

Only a few winding lanes and we found ourselves at the resplendent 'CRESSFIELD HOTEL'.
it must have been rather grand looking as Jane took a rare photo.
We stowed our bikes into the hotels large conference centre , helped by the manager who had a baby in arms. Then we trotted off to our rooms. Mine was spacious and clean although the view out of the window to the caravan park a little disappointing.
An hour and a half later Jenny and Dave arrived followed shortly by Caroline and her boys.
As we were in Scotland Jane had a couple of Whiskies, Tennants for me. Och eye!
We were led into the almost opulent restaurant for our evening meal at 7.30. Which was one of the best of the tour so far. Although not quite matching the feast we had at Clitheroe on Sunday.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-9-tue-23rd-aug-kirkby-stephen-to.html' title='Day 9. Mon Aug 22nd. Clitheroe to Kirkby Stephen. 55 Miles.

After a fabulous breakfast at the 'Old Post House Hotel'. We gathered for our morning briefing and were told that although we only had 55 miles to do today, much like day 2 it was going to be a hard but great days cycling. Short in mileage long in hills! Collectively we were in high spirits as the day was warm and dry with hardly a breath of wind. We left Clitheroe behind and very soon were climbing into the FOREST OF BOWLAND.Which is a strange name for a place with no forest only open moorland. We climbed up past WADDINGTON for 4 miles before racing back down to NEWTON. Lots of sheep scattered about the place so you had to be careful on the descents. On through the picturesque village of SLAIDBURN with it's beautiful 17th Century St Andrews church. Then up again, with steep climb after steep climb with fantastic panoramic views and fast descents into NORTH YORKSHIRE.

This is really no place to ride for the faint hearted and would be a far more difficult prospect in more inclement weather. But as Tony had promised."Today was a good day" with the sun and whatever wind there was on our backs. We were having a blast! Stopping to take many photo's of the views from the long and winding car free country lanes that spread out before and after us. After turning right at INGLETON we were into the YORKSHIRE DALES, in my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful places on earth on a day like today. Fabulous cycling, just stunning!

Jane and I had opted to stick to the route sheet and take on the climb from DENT to DENT STATION.
So we headed deep into the dales. We were warned about there being a possibility of some of the road gates being closed and to take extra care on the steep descents. Very fortunate for me then as Jane reached the 3rd gate before me. I'd stopped to take yet more photo's and came hammering down the hillside, mightily relieved to see Jane's smiling face holding the gate open as I came down too fast to stop. Thanks mate I owe you one!
At 32 miles we came across a beautiful water fall just outside Dent and stopped to go for a closer look. Very tempting to go in for a dip as the water was crystal clear and very cold. I resisted and settled instead for a drink out of the falls.

We got to DENT a couple of miles further on. A picture postcard village with cobbled streets and a drinking fountain at it's center. We popped into the 'SUN INN' for lunch. I indulged myself lifted by the mornings cycling with a nice pint of Yorkshire Beer. Stealing myself for the notorious climb up to Dent station after lunch. 45 minutes later and we were on our way through the winding lanes to COWGILL.

As we turned left out of the village we hit the bottom of the climb. I soon realised that I didn't have the gears ( some may say legs) for the first part of this very steep hill. Jane is made of sterner stuff, helped by her 'Granny gear' on her triple chain set. My compact just ran out of gears and I jumped off and walked the first couple of hundred feet. As I turned the first corner the gradient abated slightly and I hopped back on for another attempt. I can't remember a tougher climb in my cycling life. Snaking steeply and unrelenting. As I reached the station Jane was waiting for me. I rested briefly before continuing what seemed like an age before finally reaching the top of this 4 mile climb 1750 ft up. But I was so pleased we had chosen to take it on. We then had a winding, steep in places, descent into CUMBRIA, where we were treated to a succession of Tornado Jet fly pasts (info supplied by Dave S). More country lanes disappeared under our wheels and we arrived at our destination KIRKBY STEPHEN in high spirits. What a days cycling! The best ever!

Jane was staying at the Black Bull Hotel, so I left her there and went in search of my B&B. Just as I was thinking this day couldn't get any better I found my accommodation. A smart and beautifully decorated house just off the high street and was welcomed by my hosts Barbara and Ken, taken into the garden where Ken took my bike and Barbara led me up the garden path sat me down and produced a pot of tea cakes and biscuits. Result! As I was sitting in the upper decking of the immaculately kept garden a pair of Macaws flew over, resplendent in their green and red plumage. Did I just imagine that? I went to find Barbara and she explained that the town used to have 7 of these birds ,but now only two remain. Free to fly around in the day before returning home in the evening. Barbara then asked me if I needed any clothes washed and dried! Truly this was a day of days!

I retired to my room that was fit for a king, washed and changed, handed Barbara my cycling gear and went to the Black Bull to have a drink with Jane. After about an hour Dave and Jenny arrived, who had also had a great day and were tired but happy. I described my welcome at the 'WHITE GILL HOUSE' and Dave was soon away for his tea and cake, returning 45 mins later with a spring in his step.

We shared stories of the day over a beer and returned to Barbara and Kens to get changed for the evening meal at the Black Bull.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-8-mon-aug-22nd-clitheroe-to-kirkby.html' title='Day 8. Sun 21st Aug. Acton Bridge to Clitheroe. 65 Miles.

After a great night and breakfast at the HollyBush Inn. We set off on a day I had been looking forward to the least since way back. When I was first pawing through the route maps of this bike ride. Travelling the suburb ridden roads between Manchester and Warrington and up past Blackburn.

      Manchester Ship Canal

Initially the roads were nice country lanes but soon gave way to suburban sprawl, between Manchester and Warrington. We passed the toll gate and progressed over the MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. Which was built between 1887-1894 because of the extremely high tolls and harbour dues local businesses had to pay Liverpool for importing and exporting.

More boring suburban roads followed until we reached our only spot of countryside RIVINGTON MOORS. We encountered quite a steep climb through winter hill which offered views across to Blackburn.

The downside to this climb was the many motorbikes that were racing up and down this pass for some sort of photography Sunday.

On the other side of the pass was BELMONT our intended lunch stop. We managed to pick out a pub that had only two customers and sold no hot food! Although the landlord having found out that his nephew lived near Jane promptly disappeared into the kitchen and rustled up some sandwiches. We rested for half an hour and left to complete what was indeed turning out to be a bit of a miserable day for me. As soon as we got back on the uninspiring A675 to Blackburn, I felt drained and struggled to keep up the pace set by my stronger cycling buddy. This just soured my mood even more, with the prospects of cycling through Blackburn not helping any. Thankfully Blackburn was soon by-passed and we got into the more leafy LONGBRIDGE FELL along the B6243 and into CLITHEROE.
We arrived at the Old Post House Hotel and were given a warm welcome by the manager, a cheery chap whose name escapes me now.
My mood lifted somewhat when I was shown to my lovely room with one of those stand alone baths, into which I quickly slipped for a long hot soak to sooth my aching bones. I popped into town later and read my first newspaper of the trip, accompanied by a pint. Returning an hour or so later to watch the other riders come in. We pontificated a while about where we should eat this evening, eventually deciding to stay put. A wise decision as it turned out. Despite the rather eccentric manner of the friendly host we received what turned out to be a delicious spread served for the second night in a row with a beaming smile.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-7-sun-21st-aug-acton-bridge-to.html' title='Day 7. Sat 20th Aug. Wentnor to Acton Bridge. 70 miles

Glad to see the back of the Crown Inn, I cycled back down the hill to meet up with the group.
Caught my first glimpse of Bob since we set off last Sunday! He's been having problems with the distances on his heavy hybrid, getting back much later than us each day. But this morning he seemed to be in high spirits, I noticed one of the panier's had been ditched. Wise decision.
70 miles today and apart from the first few miles through the Shropshire Hills, gently undulating, was the word for the day, through Shropshire ,briefly touching wales and into Cheshire to Acton Bridge, just east of Runcorn.
We set off at 8.45 and were soon into our stride. Today was a good day for cycling. With no Wind to speak of and the sun shining. We had been given news from home off all the rain in the south of England. Shame. Sunny up North!
We were soon eating up the miles, passing through PONTESBURY the other side of the Shropshire Hills.
I noticed the road signs were again in English and Welsh, with signs showing we were close to WREXHAM.
Lunch was in MALPAS in CHESHIRE. 10 miles further on at 32miles. We passed over the Shropshire Union Canal, then doubled back to take some pictures of the canal boats and to catch our breath. Then on to Malpas.

Shropshire Union Canal

MALPAS is a historic town dating back to the 9th century and the Mercian Saxons and is mentioned in the great doomsday book of 1086.
We stopped opposite the monument and found a great little Cafe'/Restaurant called 'A Table at Eatons'.
Which is run by husband and wife John and Louise Furnival. It's a grade II listed building with a splendid eating area upstairs. A delicious homemade soup of cauliflower and stilton was consumed with our tea and coffee. Scones for desert with scrumptious homemade jam. It was such a nice place with great hospitality that we stayed for an hour. Very unusual for us. We were just getting ready to go when we were pleased to see Suni and Chris arrive, resplendent in their matching swiss cycling outfits and very expensive carbon light weight bikes. We waved them in, a quick progress report and we were off. Soon speeding along the Cheshire countryside to Beeston Castle at 51 miles. A 13th century castle ruins, built by the Earl of Chester. One of the great barons of Henry III's England. We could just about make out the people walking across the great gatehouse at the top. Apparently you can see across 8 counties from the Welsh mountains in the west to the Pennines in the east.

Beeston Castle

We passed the castle and continued north through the DELEMERE FOREST and reached our accommodation the quaint 'Hollybush Inn' at ACTON BRIDGE one of the oldest pubs in England. Dating back to the 16th century. Once a working farm, with the barns converted to 14 en-suite bedrooms.
Jane and I were the first to arrive and were given a warm welcome by Martin and his bar staff. I managed to get an upgrade to a larger room for me and Dave as our room was a bit small and stuffy with just a skylight for ventilation. An hour later we were enjoying a pint in the ancient public bar and were joined by Dave and Jenny a short while later.

Holly Bush Inn
We received wonderful hospitality at the 'Hollybush Inn' and enjoyed a fine meal in the old restaurant. After staying the previous two days in travel lodges the Wye Valley Hotel was a pleasant change, a fine breakfast was devoured and we gathered ourselves outside enjoying the early morning sunshine whilst giving our bikes a generous coating of GT85.
As the terrain was fairly flat the mileage has increased. Serious mileage as far as I'm concerned. Never having cycled more than 75 miles this is a first for me.
Jane and I wanted to get 50 miles knocked off before stopping for lunch, so Dunkertons Cider Mill was our aim at 52miles. We left at 8.45 and were quickly into our rhythm. Yesterdays tired legs revived,I was feeling refreshed and strong.
The Countryside was beautiful as we headed along the Wye Valley on the A466. We followed the river wye, which had fast flowing water and rapids from the previous three days rain. Having a great vantage point from the elevated position of the road. The only down side being the shade the forest trees offered, making it feel quite fresh. After 5 miles we crossed over the river continuing up the A466 to MONMOUTH. Then following the country roads that ran parallel with the river monnow and into HEREFORDSHIRE.

It was truly becoming a glorious English summers day, no better way to spend it than cycling through the fantastic Herefordshire countryside, where we repeatedly had panoramic views across this green and pleasant land. At 20 miles we had to cycle through a farm and were greeted by the startled barks of the farms working colly. Then a sharp descent where the roads became pretty rough because of the farm traffic.

Herefordshire!
We briefly touched the B4348 crossing the railway line then back onto the narrow farm lanes, passing MADLEY and BISHOPSTONE. We then had another 10 miles of narrow lanes through woodland and hedgerows accompanied by lots of hedgerow birds playing chase with us it seemed criss-crossing in front of us in a song bird relay race. We reached our stop after just over 3 hours. A very healthy average of 16mph. It was the first time this trip we had done 50 miles straight off and we were ready for some lunch.
Dunkerton's Cider Mill was an ideal choice. A beautiful old converted farm where they grow apples and pears, using a traditional press and mill.We could easily have spent the rest of the day here in this idyllic spot and even enjoyed a guided tour around the orchards. Maybe another time! As it was we were content with relaxing outside in the sunshine, with a nice bowl of soup with carrot cake to follow.
Washed down with a small bottle of cider, which tasted divine, although at 7% I decided not to drink it all. Having a couple of bottles of homemade raspberry aid instead which was delicious.

We lingered for an hour finally pulling ourselves out of our slumber to cycle the final 29 miles to WENTNOR.

Just as we headed down the road Tony caught us up in the van. The first time on this trip. He relayed to us that everyone was enjoying this day and he was headed to Dunkertons to wait for the other cyclists. So we were still ahead after stopping for an hour! The rest of the afternoon was much as the morning, great car less roads, stunning views and we were soon into SHROPSHIRE where the roads started to have a bit more elevation with a few steeper climbs and descents in the Shropshire hills. We were grateful for one of those descents , whilst travelling through another farm we were chased out by a couple of dogs.
Eventually we got to a T- junction and had to split up as Janes B&b was in Norbury to the left and mine in Wentnor to the right. The first time I've been on my own this week, I then proceeded to miss my turn and cycled on oblivious for another couple of miles before re-tracing my steps and climbing a very steep hill to my b&b the Crown Inn.
A great days cycling in which we had covered 80 miles in 6 hours. The crown inn was shut when I got there!
Fortunately the tumble driers in the laundry had packed in and one of the staff was hanging sheets out the back, so I was able to get to my room. It was only 3 'o clock.
The intended roster point for tonight's meal was the Inn On The Green which I had just passed down the hill. So I had a bath and waited for Tony to arrive with the bags. He got in at 4.30.
The room was a bit grubby and antiquated with the most uncomfortable bed . So as soon as I got changed I went downstairs to the bar. I had a pint then decided to walk back down the hill to the Inn on the Green. As Caroline and the boys were staying there, they would be back soon and I fancied some company. Just as got to the pub they arrived, as did Jane who had been given a lift by her host. Jenny and Dave arrived soon after and were taken back to their accommodation by Tony. Dave had a couple of punctures today which slowed his progress.
When we eventually all gathered together for dinner we had another decent meal and fine evening.
We seem to be getting along well as a group, it's just a shame really that 'The Posh' keep themselves apart. Still their loss.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://chrishacking.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-5-friday-aug-19th-tintern-to.html' title='Day 5.. The forecast today was a little better and we may even get some sunshine later in the day.
It was still raining when we left the Premier Inn and we soon caught up with Dave and Jenny who had left a couple of minutes earlier. We had to cycle along the busy A38 out of town and as it was rush hour not a pleasant experience. We crossed over the M5 then turned sharp left to PURITON along quieter country lanes into the Somerset Levels. We missed a turn and doubled back, caught Jenny and Dave up again, so we slowed up for a little chat then sped on. I was feeling a little guilty about splitting the girls up. We had spoken about it last night and although Jenny was cool about it. I think she is a little pissed off. Jane and I also had a discussion about riding with each other. The gist of it being that if at any time either of us would like to cycle with the others it would be fine. Although we are getting on very well at the moment and I'm certainly enjoying her company and pace. So on we went together. Not even a sniff of a hill until we get to Cheddar Gorge 17 miles into the ride. Or Cheddar George as Dave would say!
By now it had started to chuck it down as we began the climb up the gorge. So we had to contend with a stream of water running down the road as well as the climb. Not Ideal. Parts of the gorge are quite steep but mainly just a slow slog on the saddle. When we got to the top it was a little exposed and we had a bit of a head on wind to deal with as well. Which made for slow progress for the next 5 miles.
Eventually we reached the other side and the rain abated, so we stopped for a photo of the views down to the CHEW VALLEY LAKE. We descended on narrow lanes through REGIL and WINFORD crossing the A38 down to the Avon-mouth at EASTON-IN-GORDAN. Where we stopped at the first pub we saw for lunch. Thoroughly soaked.
Views to CHEW VALLEY LAKE

Apart from an elderly couple we were the only one's in the pub. The old boy was particularly chatty, spreading his pearls of wisdom about the Worzels being from round these parts.. Quite Bazaar!
The young barman served us up a lovely large bowl of pea soup(trust me it was delicious) a coffee for me and a pot of tea for Jane. We lingered for about 45 mins, then donned our wet gear and set off for the river.
Being the fool I am, I thought the Avon mouth crossing was the river Severn. A joke that Jane would share with me (at me) for the next two weeks. It was another 17 miles of suburban cycling before we reached that particular target. We eventually got to the bridge at 2.30 after having to go on a diverted route adding 3 miles onto our 70. The rest of the group ignored it and carried their bikes over the workers fence.
My first ever crossing over the Severn on a bike so I was quite excited, so took some more photo's. What
made me laugh though was the 15mph speed warning for cyclists. Too windy up there to get any sort of speed up.

Severn Cycle Path with speed Warning!

Having traversed the bridge we followed the A466 towards CHEWPSTOW. I was feeling tired by now and was struggling to keep up with the pace. As we climbed past the racecourse and I was getting seriously tired and wasn't helped by the sight of Jane disappearing into the distance. However as I reached the top the sun made a rare appearance, instantly lifting my mood as I started the long descent down to TINTERN along the Wye Valley. It was a welcome rest as I was pretty much spent. The drop through the valley started 6 miles before Tintern, but just went on and on. I soon realised that it must be downhill all the way to the hotel. Wonderful!

Into Wales!

We stopped at the beautiful relic of Tintern Abbey a 12th century ruin with it's amazing pillars, archways and huge nave. We rolled into Tintern at 4pm. I was particularly pleased to see the WYE VALLEY HOTEL looked a class above the previous two stops. We congratulated each other on reaching Wales and went our different ways. Jane staying opposite at the Parva Farmhouse.

Tintern Abbey

I was greeted by the hostess with the mostess Sue, who produced a bucket of warm water and an old beer towel so I could clean off the days filth from the bike. Before storing it in the laundry room for the night.
My room was wonderful and I was soon washed and changed and downstairs in the bar! Where I had a chat with a South African couple who were touring the UK. Five weeks travelling, he said and I wish we had stayed in Wales, so beautiful.
Jane arrived shortly afterwards and we enjoyed another drink and were finally joined by the rest at about 5.30.
The Evening went well. Pete who was close to giving up last night seemed to have settled down into the ride today and was in a better frame of mind , committing to soldier on.(Well done Caroline).
Everyone else in our group of eight ( couldn't tell you about 'The Posh' because we don't see them. They chose not to eat with us again tonight, strange bunch) was tired but in a happy frame of mind.We had put the toughest days behind us and the prospect of a relatively flat couple of days had lifted the mood. Add to that the sun finally making an appearance, we were in a good place.
Jenny,Jane ,Tony and Ken joined us after their meal at the Parva Farmhouse. Tony assuring us of a great days cycling tomorrow..

Jenny and Jane at the Wye Valley Hotel Tintern

Day 3 Wed 17th Aug Whiddon Down to Bridgewater 60 Miles

We left the rather basic Travel Lodge at Whiddon Down and crossed the path to the Little Chef for breakfast. Another good evening last night at the Post Inn Pub. My roommate Dave has many amusing tales to tell, being ex-RAF and a Drama Teacher, just retired! Turns out he used to teach where my youngest daughter Sarah is going to University this year and his daughter lives very close too. For some bizarre reason I keep calling him Bob, like a kind of nervous stammer my brain in saying Dave but Bob keeps popping out!
Jenny and Jane are proper petrol heads both with soft top sports cars. Jen's got a Pink Merc called Pearl and Jane an MR2. No pictures of their children on their phone's just cars! I kept quiet about my Renault Clio...

We set off at 8.30, the weather was drizzly. We were soon passing through the market town of CREDITON, then crossing the river Exe to COLLUMPTON. Most of the roads were ok but when you got near a farm they were covered in S**t and Muck and it was becoming a bit of a pain picking your way across the narrow lanes to avoid the debris. After Collumpton we only had a few miles to our stop in CULMSTOCK. Which was a lovely little convenience store called 'Strand Stores'. Where we sat down to enjoy a bowl of soup and a cake, with a hot drink. The shop sold everything.Veg, fruit, drinks, alcohol, hardware, cheeses, preserves and was a post office and a cafe'. Very handy for the locals.
We stayed for 45 mins and just when we got up to leave down came the rain again.

After another 10 miles we reached the QUANTOCK Hills. Stopping at the bottom, it was a hell of a steep climb for 1.5 miles. Jane soon a distant blur on the horizon., she can climb that lady! I struggled on and eventually got to the top of the wooded hill. Jane patiently waiting at the top. We began our descent, a little way down the hill there was a break in the tree's so I pulled over for a photo. I could see Wales! My learned friend Dave later told me that in fact I was looking across to Cardiff.

A Distant Cardiff!
Having taken some Pics I set off after Jane only to see her climbing back up,thinking I'd punctured. Oops! sorry mate. We carried on our descent to the outskirts of Bridgewater. By now the rain had abated a little as we hit suburbia, so Jane popped onto my back wheel and we let the Satmap guide us to the Holiday Inn on the other side of town.
We were again allowed to take our bikes into the room. By now we had sussed that the van was never going to be there for us " Flyer's" as Tony called us. So we had taken a change of clothes with us today.
An hour later we met up in the bar and had a bite to eat, while waiting for the group to arrive as it was still only 4pm.
Jane's husband Rob was coming to meet her later which I thought was a nice touch.
To our surprise Christine was the first back, being one of the 'Posh' she wasn't even staying here but apparently their hotel was a further 4 miles away and she "was not going to bloody well cycle an extra 4 miles in the rain" and was waiting for the van to take her to the luxury she was accustomed to. As if by magic Tony arrived and promptly delivered her to her desired location.
Very soon everyone else was arriving and we agreed to meet at 7.30pm for evening drinks and a meal..
We met at reception and went in only to find Caroline and her hungry boys already munching their way through dinner. So we sat down at a table opposite and were joined by Tony and Ken. Rob having decided not to intrude on our holiday had already left.

Day 2 Tuesday 16th August Lostwithiel to Whiddon Down 53 Miles

A great day yesterday and an interesting evening. I got to know Jenny and Jane a little better and I think we are now comfortable in each others company. Jane and I have agreed to stick together tomorrow as we are closest to each others pace and of the same mindset when it comes to cycling distances. Jenny also wants to cycle at a comfortable pace for her and would rather stay with the main group.
Almost 20 miles less cycling than yesterday but very long climbs throughout the day.
We left the golf club at 8.30am. Today's weather is a bit hit and miss promising scattered showers throughout the day but the temperature was good with very little wind. We stayed on the A390 for the first seven miles then turned off along the B3360 into Bodmin Moor. After 15 miles we reached Minions which is the highest village in Cornwall. This was supposed to be our first stop but at only 15 miles we'd barely warmed up so decided to carry on to Tavistock and have a bite to eat there. Having climbed up and over Bodmin we descended steeply into Rilla Mill, then up again to Bray Shop. Quite tough cycling today as the climbs and descents are relentless and we still have the big climb over Dartmoor to do. Out of Bray Shop we descended down again to Horsebridge and crossed the river Tamar into Devon. Where we stopped for a breather on the bridge. I was busy taking photo's when Jane noticed an Otter on the rivers edge. We stood and watched it for a while and just as I was about to take a photo it slipped back into the water and was gone.

As we were trying to find it again a large fish came jumping out of the water. Amazing. Stopped for 5 mins and seen an Otter and a flying fish!
Cheered by our discovery we continued over the bridge into Devon and straight into a very steep climb of a mile up to the unusually named village of CHIPSHOP. A short descent and another sharp climb and we were descending into Tavistock. As it was Tuesday it was market day so we parked our bikes up outside the large indoor market and stopped in the cafe just inside the entrance.
A bowl of soup a hot drink and a piece of cake were consumed as we rested up for 45 mins before tackling the long climb over Dartmoor.
Fully re-charged we set off and were soon climbing again out of Tavistock. We passed a Tractor clipping the hedgerows and both intimated that we had entered puncture territory. Sure enough as soon as we passed and were starting the climb I got my first and only puncture of the whole trip! Ten minutes later and we were off again but not before to our surprise Christine came past us. As we would find out many times on this tour Christine was on a mission. She doesn't do any official stops ,preferring to keep going on her own and stopping by the roadside to eat out of her bag. Each to their own I suppose, but that wasn't my idea of fun. Why pay for a group trip and stay on your own all day every day?
Anyway we soon caught her up and after exchanging some pleasantries in which she mentioned something about the Tortoise and the Hare, funny lady, we left her behind to enjoy her own company.

However having said that. Whenever we have a hill of any note to climb. Jane is soon out of site and leaving me on my own to muse over my lack of stamina for hill climbing. After about 5 miles of climbing I reached the ice cream van, roughly half way up. Jane was patiently waiting for me. I was catching my breath and taking a couple of photo's when a woman, thinking that we were a couple offered to take a photo of us together. Photo taken we set off for the rest of the climb. After a couple more miles we passed a van offloading bikes and young men, who after another couple of miles caught us up. They were cycling from Land's End to Lincoln in 6 days. At least they gave Jane some company up and over the next 5 miles of climbing. As I was soon left in their wake.
Finally I reached the top and was greeted by the welcome sign of the Warren House Inn, with Jane indicating that we should pop in for a drink. I took no persuading and was soon enjoying a nice cold pint! Sitting outside and taking in the views.
We stopped for about 30 mins and saw Christine cycle past. Stoically pressing on to the finish line at Whiddon Down. Thoroughly refreshed we had one more hill to negotiate and caught Christine up just before the top. Where we turned left off the main drag and descended quickly passing some hairy cows with horns, who were not impressed at all by our presence and refused to get off the road as we approached them. Carefully skirting around the beasts we floated down the hills through the narrow lanes to Wonson, before a steep climb to Whiddon Down.

We passed the Post Inn Pub which was our intended eating venue for the evening, before turning left into the Travel Lodge just down the road. To our surprise we were instructed to take our bikes into our rooms!
We agreed to meet up an hour later after having had a shower and rest to pop over to the pub and wait for the rest of the group to finish. By the time I tapped on their door Jenny had got back."3rd again" she exclaimed. The three of us set off for the pub 200yds up the road and were most aggrieved to find it shut!
A young Irish girl who was touring on a mountain bike saw our predicament as we were staring balefully into the pub window and let us know that there was a pub about 4 miles down the road that may still be open.
Stuff that we said and limped back to the Travel lodge where we bought 4 cans of cider at the garage opposite and sat on the grass bank in the afternoon sunshine to enjoy a drink. Classy!

A short while later the van arrived with our clothes, so we went back to our rooms for a couple of hours before strolling back up the road for dinner.

You can view todays route on this link
.http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/59953430

Day 1 Mon 15th August Land's End to Lostwithiel 70 Miles

Having arrived quite late at the hotel last night with Bob,Christine, Howard and Steph. We just had time to drop off our bags before eating at 8pm . I'd had a chat with Bob at the station while we waited for the others before being picked up by Ken our team leader. I was amazed at how unprepared he was for a ride of such magnitude. He'd only been cycling for a few months and had been ill advised about the bike he had purchased for this trip. A heavy hybrid with panier's and front bag. We have a van to take our stuff so why load yourself down with panier's on a heavy bike?
Howard and Steph excused themselves from us as they had met a friend for dinner at the hotel. Leaving myself ,Bob and Christine to eat together. It turned out to be one of the very few occasions I would have the pleasure of their company on this trip. As they were part of the 'Posh Group' who enjoyed 4* accommodation and fine dining!
By the time we had eaten it was 9.30. I popped outside to enjoy the last few minutes of sunlight and take a photo of one end of the Country...
I was travel weary so decided to call it a day and go to my room to have a read of my book and an early night. At about 10pm my new roommate Dave Smith arrived. We had a quick chat before lights out and it must have been all of 3 minutes before he was snoring loudly." I'm glad I brought numerous pairs of earplugs".

Breakfast was at 7.30 and I was really looking forward to meeting with my new cycling buddies, with whom I was about to spend the next two weeks with.
The group mustered around the breakfast table, after forcing myself to eat cereal, fruit and a full English washed down with coffee and juice we gathered around our group leaders Ken and Tony for our first day's briefing.
"Today is going to be a great days cycling" exclaimed Tony. This was to be his mantra for the whole trip. "You're really going to enjoy it".

After the briefing we went to our bikes where Howard and Steph fitted our Satmaps.
I should explain that Howard is the owner and designer of the Satmap GPS system. As he and Steph were on this trip he had decided to use those of us who were willing as 'Guinea Pigs' for some feedback.
We were given a quick 'idiot's guide' and then were soon gathered around the Land's End sign for our group photo.

I'd had a brief chat with Jenny who greeted me with. " Your the lad from Croxley. My mates used to run the pub in Croxley". Long time since I've been called a lad. Jenny was doing the ride with her friend Jane who I was introduced to by Jenny before we left for our first day of cycling up and down the B roads of the North Cornish coast.
Now I'd decided on this trip that even if it meant cycling outside my comfort zone or slower than I'd like I would stay with people. Unlike when I did the London to Paris a couple of years earlier where I spent most of the 4 days cycling at my pace and generally not staying with people long enough to get to know them.

Despite thinking I might be one of the slowest on this trip I soon realised the opposite to be true. So I found myself picking through the riders. Too slow move on. Too slow move on. Bob was soon left behind by the group on his heavily laden machine.
I cycled for a few miles with Caroline. A 30 something primary school teacher with a happy disposition, who was pleasant company. She'd done her prep unlike Bob, lots of cycling and had a good Trek road bike with a little rack for carrying her essentials.
She was quite concerned about leaving the others behind and began to slow down after about ten miles to bring the group back together. Akin to a mother hen gathering her chicks. This was to be the theme for her trip as she quickly became the Mother figure to her 'Boys'. Peter, Dave W and Robin. All considerably older than their adopted Mum Caroline! Making sure they all got home safely after each days cycling.

Only a couple more cyclists ahead of me now so I pushed on to catch them up. It turned out to be Jenny and Jane. So I stuck with them all the way to our first stop at Hayle after 23 miles of ups and downs through north Cornwall. Nothing too serious just lots of undulation with some short steep climbs and descents thrown in for good measure!

At Hayle we stopped at the Fresh Cafe'. Where despite being promised at the mornings briefing that they would be expecting us, the young lady was quite perplexed about the sudden invasion of 14 cyclists so early on a Monday morning. Well it was about 10.30 by the time we all got there. Bob arriving a good 20 mins behind everyone else. I bought a coffee and a cake, and walked across the road to the bench where we were all congregated and got a few more lessons on GPS ing from Steph.
A few of the group had already left by the time Jenny , Jane and I set off. We carried along the north coast to Portreath and Porthtowen, which had a wonderful sandy beach. I made a mental note to go for a swim there one sunny day.
We made it to St Agnes 40 miles into our day for our scheduled lunch stop. Quite frankly the last thing I wanted was more food, so at the first Cafe' we found we stopped for a cup of tea and it began to rain heavily.
We saw from our vantage point in the Cafe', Caroline and her newly formed flock go past, pausing briefly, before heading down the steep hill to a pub for lunch.
Christine joined us just before we set off in the rain along with her bright yellow rain cap. 30 miles to go and it was now pissing down. Great!
We passed through Perranporth after we had overcome another short sharp ascent. It had a beautiful sandy beach. I made a mental note......
Jenny wanted to slow down a bit so Jane and I carried on alone and were soon upping the pace, judging each others capability. Although now a little tired I was so pleased Jane was happy to cycle a little faster and we were soon flying along.
We cut inland just before Newquay, passing through St Newland East, Whitecross and crossing the busy A30 just before Bodmin. Heading east towards our stop for the night. Lostwithiel Golf and Country Club.

I rest of the ride seemed to fly by as we chatted our way through the last 20 miles before crossing the river Fowey and into town.
The Golf club was a rather grand affair and with our bikes safely stowed we were shown to our rooms, which were like little apartments scattered around the main building. Very tasteful and well equipped. As we were soaked by the constant rainfall that afternoon I was a bit miffed to find that on our arrival the van wasn't there with our clothes.
I had a shower and sat around with a towel on for the next hour before our bags finally arrived.

Jenny like me is a keen swimmer, so we were really pleased to find a swimming pool at the club. So the three of us set of for the pool as soon as our bags arrived. However it was a rather small pool so we were reduced to doing breast stroke around the perimeter. None the less it was still relaxing and a welcome dip for our tired limbs.
We agreed to meet later in the bar and walk into town for dinner as the hotel menu looked a little expensive.
After about 45 mins in the pool we went back to our apartments, still no sign of Dave, so I changed and headed for the bar for a much deserved pint at about 6.30pm.
The girls joined me at 7 and we walked the one mile into town. After wandering around town for 10 minutes we decided we liked the look of The Royal Oak and went in for our evening meal.
Curry's all round I recall. We had a lovely chat where I learned a little more about the girls and they me.
After a couple of drinks with our food we were about to leave when we saw our group leaders Ken and Tony in the other bar, so we stepped in for a quick chat before heading back to the Hotel.

Land's End.

You can view the route on this link.
http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/59948470

No Drama's

Having rested up this last week there's not a lot to report.
I did a few journeys to work and back last week and the week before.
Also came 3rd in my age group in the USN Dorney Lake Sprint Triathlon, which was pleasing. 41st out of 200 for all ages.
9th in the swim, 47th on the bike and as usual my running lets me down 102nd on that. But not a bad effort.
Quite a lot of swimming to keep me ticking over, with a few Lake swims at Denham Skiing Lake. Did a 3.8K on Monday with Dave in 1hr 2.08 which is a very respectable time for an Iron man swim distance. Maybe thats something for next year...Iron Man.. mmmmmmm shame there's a marathon at the end.

So now only 2 days till the off.
Cannot wait. Really, really looking forward to it.
Got some good news from the organisers last week. We are all going to be given Satmap GPS systems for our bikes. A great time was had by all and fortunately the weather was kind to us.

<img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AGRVNc5f8vI/TibDorLwZqI/AAAAAAAAAA8/gslN1p_3jzk/s320/10072011798.jpg" t$="true" width="320" />Pictures. Dorney lake is where the Olympic rowing will take place and is flat and fast.
I finished with a respectable time of 1hr 16mins 37 sec,10th in my age group, which is just 30secs over my PB. Considering I have done no running for 5 weeks I was very pleased with it.

I'm still cycling to work as often as I can and am entering another Dorney Lake Triathlon this Sunday morning ..24th. In my case this also means giving up Alcahol for a few months, As I find it easier to watch what I eat when I'm not inebriated ! I'm actually aiming for 4, but as the weight drops I may review this as I have a specific target in mind, to get to 11 stone. Which after Xmas will be roughly 1 and 3/4 stones to lose.

At the moment I only have two definate sporting challenges booked for the new year, but I will shortly be filling up the calendar with Swim races, Bicycle Sportives and Triathlons.

On Jan 22nd I have entered a cycle Audax with Michael my regular cycling buddy.
